Summer Camargo writes in the second person. Ask the trumpeter, composer, and bandleader where a tune comes from and she’ll name a person — a grandmother, a mentor, a friend she can’t stop thinking about. “I try to encapsulate a side of their spirit or a story about that person in a tune,” she says. Her debut, To Whom I Love, on Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Blue Engine Records, is exactly what the title promises: a record addressed, not merely performed. DownBeat gave it a place in the Hot Box and named her one of its “25 for the Future.”
Camargo’s sound is big, warm, unhurried, and she has no interest in hiding behind it. All About Jazz praised her “luscious trumpet and flugelhorn tone” and an improviser whose “melodic and rhythmic surprises lurk behind and leap from every corner.” She can stun at a whisper. She can growl. Wynton Marsalis, introducing her at Essentially Ellington, put it more simply: “She is spectacular in her playing and her presence.”
Camargo has played Newport alongside Jon Batiste, guested at Wynton at 60, toured with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra on Big Band Holidays, and held a chair in the Mingus Big Band. She premiered her own “Alalazoo” at the 2022 Jazz at Lincoln Center Gala, came up through Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead at the Kennedy Center, and was featured in FENDI’s Renaissance — Anima Mundi project. New York knows her from the rooms that make trumpet players: Dizzy’s, Birdland. She’s played them all as a sidewoman. Now she brings her own band.
At twenty, still a student, she got a call from the bandleader of Saturday Night Live, who had heard her play. “It’s crazy how in five minutes your whole life can be changed.” She became the youngest member of the house band in 2022 and has held the chair ever since — a standing Saturday night in Studio 8H that most players spend a career angling toward. A Broadway pit followed, in Just in Time.
The awards read less like a résumé than a trail of people who heard her early: the Laurie Frink Grant, the Ella Fitzgerald Outstanding Soloist Award, the International Trumpet Guild’s Ryan Anthony Memorial Competition, the Dr. J. Douglas White Student Composition Contest. Now she teaches in the rooms that raised her — masterclasses at the JEN conference, the Louis Armstrong House Museum, jazz camps around the country — and judges the festivals she once competed in: Essentially Ellington regionals, Eau Claire and Northern State.
”The most boisterous crowd response came soon after those young trumpeters
took the stage. Camargo’s gutsy opening solo brought patrons to their feet.”
