Charlie & the Tropicales

Charlie & the Tropicales

Charlie & the Tropicales turn any room into a 1950s Caribbean dance hall, powered by torrid horns, tropical rhythms and some of New Orleans' most in-demand players. With a nod to New Orleans’ history as the northernmost port of the Caribbean, the Tropicales play music from Trinidad and Venezuela, Martinique and Guadeloupe, and other stops along the archipelago. Biguines and boleros, calypsos and cumbias, rocksteady and rhumba — scorching tropicalia and classic New Orleans jams, songs that get stuck in your head. Guaranteed to melt the ice in your drink.

The Tropicales new album, New Orleans '26, has been making waves with its mix of New Orleans classics recast as rocksteady alongside original cumbias, calypsos and biguines, with guests Jon Cleary, Xavier Lynn, Mireya Ramos, Sally Baby and more. Glide raved that the tunes were, “custom-made to get hips swinging and feet dancing.” Their previous album, Jump Up (NuTone Recordings), features guest vocalists Cyrille Aimée, Quiana Lynell and Drew Gonsalves (Kobo Town) on material ranging from classic New Orleans R&B to traditional Caribbean repertoire.

The Tropicales keep a relentless schedule in New Orleans, establishing themselves as one of the city's most exciting bands — playing regularly at Snug Harbor, Tipitina's, the Broadside, Saturn Bar, Jazz Fest, French Quarter Festival and more. Nationally, they have played the American Music Festival (Chicago), Focal Point (St. Louis), Indianapolis Jazz Festival (Indianapolis), Bar Lunatico (Brooklyn), Exit Zero Jazz Festival (Cape May), and more.

Halloran's horn turns up in some unlikely and impressive places. A first-call sideman, Halloran has recorded with U2, Queens of the Stone Age, Rickie Lee Jones, the Afghan Whigs and the Squirrel Nut Zippers, played on Jon Cleary's Grammy-winning GoGo Juice, and shared stages with Allen Toussaint, the O'Jays, Calexico and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. The Tropicales have been filling clubs for almost a decade, so grab a daiquiri, turn up the sound system and join this subtropical dance party in sunny New Orleans.
